How does PainChek® work
PainChek® Universal provides two assessment types depending on the condition of the person being assessed, and guides the assessor
in identifying which method is most appropriate.
1. The PainChek® Pain Assessment – For those unable to reliably self-report their pain
The PainChek® pain assessment combines an AI facial analysis tool and a modern pain assessment framework to identify and quantify pain accurately and consistently, as follows:

- PainChek®’s AI tool conducts a real-time analysis of the person’s face, recording the presence of certain microexpressions proven to be indicators of pain.
- The assessor’s clinical observations are recorded through an intelligently automated framework, standardising the observation format.
- This data is used to generate an overall pain rating – the key clinical output of the PainChek® assessment.
2. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) – For those who can reliably self-report their pain
Where the NRS assessment is used, PainChek® guides the assessor to ask a standardised question, quantifying the level of pain being experienced, and if relevant, the location of pain.
This data is then converted into an overall pain rating.
These outcomes form the evidence base supporting ongoing pain management interventions. Historical data guides decision-making, informs care planning, and ensures residents receive consistent, high-quality care.
